The verdict

W5 remains one of Northern Ireland's strongest family attractions, particularly on rainy days. Certain exhibits could be refreshed and extras can add up, the overall experience offers good value and keeps children engaged for hours.

What we loved

  • Huge number of interactive exhibits across multiple floors.
  • Excellent rainy-day option in Belfast.
  • Can easily keep children entertained for several hours.
  • Central Titanic Quarter location within walking distance of the city centre.
  • Regular live demonstrations, activities and temporary exhibitions.

Worth knowing

  • Parking costs can significantly increase the overall spend.
  • Some repeat visitors feel certain exhibits could be updated more frequently.
  • Popular areas can become busy during weekends and school holidays.
  • Some optional activities and areas may carry additional charges.

Good to know

  • Book online in advance as pre-booking is required.
  • Allow at least 3-5 hours to properly explore the exhibits.
  • Bring a packed lunch if you want to keep costs down.
  • Arrive early at weekends and school holidays for a quieter experience.
  • Parking at the Odyssey complex is convenient but is a common source of extra expense.
  • Last admission is two hours before closing.
  • Suitable for a wide range of ages, but primary-school children tend to get the most out of it.

If you've lived in Northern Ireland for any length of time, chances are you've either been to W5 as a child or have been dragged along by a younger family member. The good news is that it still holds up.

Located in Belfast's Titanic Quarter beside the SSE Arena, W5 is a large science and discovery centre spread across multiple levels. Rather than walking around looking at displays, you're encouraged to touch, build, experiment and get involved.

Expect optical illusions, engineering challenges, climbing structures, interactive technology, sensory exhibits and plenty of opportunities for kids to learn without realising they're learning.

Some of the standout attractions include:

  • The famous vortex tunnel
  • Interactive illusion and sensory exhibits
  • Hands-on science stations
  • Large climbing and activity areas
  • Temporary themed exhibitions and events
  • Live demonstrations and shows

Is it worth it?

For most families, yes.

A recurring theme from visitor feedback is that children can happily spend four to six hours here without getting bored. Compared with many indoor attractions, W5 offers a lot of activities within the admission price and it's one of the few places in Belfast where poor weather genuinely doesn't matter.

Value for money is generally viewed positively. Recent discussions from Northern Ireland visitors show many people consider the ticket price reasonable given the amount of time families can spend inside. Others feel some of the exhibits haven't changed significantly over the years and would like to see more investment in refreshing older areas.

Both views can be true. If you're visiting for the first time or only occasionally, there's plenty to enjoy. Annual visitors may notice familiar exhibits.

Getting there

W5 sits at 2 Queens Quay in Belfast's Titanic Quarter.

You can:

  • Walk from Belfast city centre in around 15 to 20 minutes
  • Use nearby bus and Glider connections
  • Drive and use the Odyssey car park
  • Combine your visit with Titanic Quarter attractions nearby

The location makes it easy to turn the trip into a full day around the waterfront.

Good to know

Pre-booking is required and opening hours vary throughout the year.

Lockers are available on-site and there are facilities for buggies. Accessibility is generally strong, with lifts, accessible toilets and exhibits designed to accommodate a range of needs.

One practical point mentioned regularly by visitors is parking. The attraction itself is often considered good value, but parking charges can catch families by surprise if they haven't planned ahead.

Final thoughts

W5 remains one of Belfast's most reliable family days out. It is educational without feeling like school, active without being exhausting and flexible enough to suit different ages.

It is not perfect. Some exhibits could benefit from updating and busy periods can feel crowded. Even so, if you're looking for an indoor attraction that genuinely keeps children engaged for hours, W5 is still one of the safest recommendations in Northern Ireland.
